Repairing Chiming Clocks Mechanical vs Quartz Clock Movements

In the last few weeks I have replaced the movements in some very old mechanical wall clocks.

I am contacted almost everyday by people wanting clock repairs.

If the original clock is a mechanical clock I am the first to encourage people to have the original mechanical movement repaired......

but sometimes this is not an option due to "the cost "or the fact that "the clock is so old and has been repaired to many times it is no longer viable to continue to do so.

This is where a quartz movement can really save the day.

My first question always is

Do you want it to chime?

If the answer to this question is "no"

I suggest a standard quartz clock movement either with or without a pendulum depending on the style of the original clock.

If the answer is "Yes"

We sell a some lovely chiming movements that have a great sound and good features such as volume control, night silencer and a choice of melodies. The two most popular of these are the delux chiming movement and the Seiko movements which are available with a pendulum  or without the pendulum option. There is also a Bim Bam movement this is the only quartz movement available with a mechanical strike rather than an electronic.   If price is an issue these Westminster Chime movements  with a pendulum option or  without a pendulum option are available. They do not  have the night silence or volume control options and the melody is not as rich as the other options.... but these do tend to be great little work horses and last for about 10 years.

The pros of using a quartz movement are that it is cost effective compared to expensive mechanical repairs, the quartz movements are mostly trouble free. The old mechanical movement can be kept so that if down the track someone wants to repair it- they can.

From a very old worn face and clock movement to a new clock dial (face) chiming movement, hands and best of all a delux chiming movement!
